Sommige namen die nu geen directe sacrale betekenis hebben, hadden die wel bij de naamgeving. In zijn boek over Engelse plaatsnamen noemt Kenneth Cameron drie typen van sacrale plaatsnamen: (1) cultuscentrum voor een bepaalde godheid, (2) aanduiding van een heilige plaats, (3) plaatsnamen die suggeren dat er een bepaalde rite werd gehouden. Het laatste type is ingewikkeld en daarom beperkt de auteur zich tot de tweeledige indeling van Thorsten Andersson: (1) Plaatsnamen met de naam van een godheid, (2) namen met een aanduiding voor een heiligdom. Beiden komen in de Nederlanden voor, zij het in zeer beperkte mate. Germanic Sacral Place Names in the Low Countries De meaning of sacral names is of primary importance to the study of these names. Some names that do not seem in any way related to the sacred now, did relate to it when the name was given. In his book on English sacral toponymics Kenneth Cameron names three types: (1) cult centre of a deity, (2) reference to a holy place, (3) toponymics that suggest the former existence of some kind of artificial rite. The last type is somehow too complicated and therefore the author limits himself to the twofold division of Thorsten Andersson: (1) toponymics with the name of a deity and (2) toponymics with reference to a sanctuary. Both types appear in the Lowlands, but rather scarcely. |
