Abstract :
In 1918, Josef Strzygowski wrote the foundational work on the history of Armenian architecture, Die Baukunst der Armenier und Europa. Drawing from the records of Armenian architect T‘oros T‘oramanyan, Strzygowski formulated a monumental comparative study in which he defined Armenia's position within the architectural developments of Byzantium, Iran, and Western Europe. As many scholars have noted, Strzygowski's thesis is problematic, mainly because of his inventive attitude towards chronology and his overtly racist interpretation of architecture.
