Abstract :
Any consideration of the function of paraenesis in 1 Thess 4,1-12; 5,12-22 must begin with two preliminary questions. Neither of these questions needs to be fully addressed, but each of them needs to be addressed insofar as they bear upon the function of the paraenesis in 1 Thess 4,1-12 and 5,12-22. The first preliminary question concerns the unity and integrity of 1 Thessalonians. The second concerns the genre – the epistolary genre and the rhetorical genre! – of 1 Thessalonians.
