Abstract :
“Slander” in verse 9b refers to an action done by some Jews, and the Christians of Smyrna are affected by what these Jews do. It has recently been claimed that “slander” is not the correct translation of τὴν βλασφημίαν in verse 9b, because this translation does not retain the nuance of “blasphemy”. According to H. Lichtenberger the term here means “die Lästerung Gottes oder Jesu Christi als des Messias und Heilands der Welt”. Others take for granted that “slander” here more specifically points to the denunciation of Christians before pagan authorities. What exactly have some Jews of Smyrna been doing to Christians?
