Abstract :
Modern translations of the Septuagint have been rare. Only two English translations have ever been produced. The first was published by the American businessman-scholar Charles Thomson in 1808, and the second by the British cleric Sir Lancelot Charles Lee Brenton in 1851. A French translation was made by P. Giguet and completed in 1875. Recently several new translation projects have come off the ground or are in the planning stage. Since 1986, a group of French scholars, guided by Marguerite Harl, is working on the project of a complete annotated translation of the Septuagint, entitled “La Bible d’Alexandrie” (BA). Seven volumes have already been issued. An Italian project, “La Bibbia dei Settanta”, has been launched by Luciana Mortari, who translated the Greek Psalter in 1983. In the Anglo-Saxon world, a translation committee chaired by Albert Pietersma and Benjamin Wright prepares a “New English Translation of the Septuagint” (NETS). The initiative to this venture was taken within the International Organisation of Septuagint and Cognate Studies (IOSCS) in its meeting at Kansas City in 1992.
