Earlier they lived in the city of Zhaowu north of the Qilian [mountains]. They were overthrown by the Tujue and moving southwards along the Congling, possessed this country. The branch lines [of the royal house] became separate kings, namely An, Cao, Shi,… They all have the surname Zhaowu.” The question as to whence the Chinese had obtained the information and the origin of the name Zhaowu have vexed scholars for almost 200 years and numerous etymologies of Zhaowu have been proposed, but none of them has yet been generally accepted. While collecting the names of Sogian kings of the 7th century, I discovered an element sounding like *čamūk among them which I believe is transcribed by the Chinese characters. In this paper I shall also discuss the historical background against which the “surname” came to existence. Au sujet des Sogdiens, les Xin Tang shu rapportent ceci: “À l’origine ils étaient Yuezhi. Autrefois ils vivaient à Zhaowa, une ville située au nord des monts Qilian. Défaits par les Tujue ils se déplacèrent vers le sud, le long des Congling et s’emparèrent du pays. La famille royale se scinda en plusieurs branches cadettes, à savoir les An, les Cao, les Shi… Tous portaient le nom de famille Zhaowu”. Depuis deux siècles, les savants se perdent en conjectures quant à la source d’information à laquelle puisèrent les Xin Tang shu, et à l’origine du nom “Zhaowu” pour lequel de nombreuses étymologies ont été suggérées. En réunissant les noms des rois Sogdiens au VIIe siècle j’ai trouvé un élément *čamūk que je pense être l’antécédent des caractères chinois ayant servi à transcrire le nom de famille Zhaowu. Dans cet article je discuterai également du contexte historique qui vit naître le nom de famille en question. |
