Abstract :
Among the few magical texts in an Iranian language and Manichaean script in the Berlin Turfan Collection is an as yet mostly unpublished text wich we are fortunate to have in a partly duplicated form in the fragments M389 and M8430/I. A precise definition of teh function of the text is possible, since the first part makes the apotropaic function perfectly clear. Other magical texts in Iranian languages and Manichaean script have been identified in teh Turfan collection, but thismagical text seems to have a clear western, indeed a specifically Semitic origin and displays elements also found in magical bowls and other texts found in Mesopotamia and neighbouring regions.
