Abstract :
The Source of the Ascension of MuÌammed from the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The Muslim Mi‘rag tradition about MuÌammed in Jerusalem has a wide spectrum of mystic commentaries. Its relationship with previous Christian and Judean traditions has been studied principally based on parallels between the Dome of the Rock, the Golgotha, and the Eleona on the Mount of Olives. The present study points to the more striking similitude with the second Kathisma church. Its double octagon gives the clue for the rare architecture of the Dome of the Rock. That church has been built around 451 by Hikelia. Its origin is strongly connected with several traditions on the Dormition and the ssumption of the Virgin. Looking to the principal Muslim traditions on the Mi‘rag, we can more easily understand how many strange features came to existence.
