Abstract :
Urban monasticism was a much wider phenomenon than it is thought to be, or at least, as it is reflected in modern scholarship, which in turn is based on the extinct ancient sources. It is also much less homogenous than the monasticism of the Judean desert and other isolated types of monasticism. Even in terms of the overall number of monastic institutions, and their variety and functions, there were perhaps many more urban ones than isolated type monasteries.
