It focuses on a historical cross section of the socioeconomic, medicinal, cultural and religious aspects of these places. The combined literary and epigraphic sources, the archaeological finds and the numismatic evidence enable us to examine whether they were unique spas, or were they sacred cult places and popular sites of healing as the others in the Graeco-Roman world. It is shown by means of the following central topics: A) The characterisation of the thermo-mineral waters in the Graeco-Roman world; B) The literary sources of thermo-mineral waters in the eastern Mediterranean basin: the classical literature and the Talmudic corpus; C) The contribution of archaeology in the region during the Roman and Byzantine periods: numismatic material and epigraphic evidence, and small finds. |
