Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 12 Date: 1999-2000 Pages: 503-508 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.12.0.504485 Abstract : Dãwūd al-Antãqi was born in 942/1535 in al-Fū'a, a village in the neighbourhood of Antioch. He was born blind and crippled and spent most of the time learning. He also wrote several books, a.o. on medicine. One of these medical books, called Tadhkarat 'uli al-bãb wal-'ajab al-'ujāb, is the subject of the article. The 10th/16th century was far from being a brilliant period in the history of Arabic sciences, and medicine was no exception. Thus the Tadhkara is a concotion of earlier medical knowledge with additional material from Prophetic (religious) and popular medicine, to which astrology is added to show the impact of the stars on human health, sickness, cures and behaviour. |
