They are not just exercises in systematic theology with the aim of demonstrating dogma or defending doctrine. They engage postmodern philosophies of the West with both classical theology and Eastern traditions. Joseph O'Leary has initiated a conversation between Derrida and the Buddhist dialectician Nâgârjuna, while Michael Barnes has drawn on Levinas to formulate the challenges faced by Catholic theology in Europe and Christian spirituality in India. Taken together, they amount to a meta-dialogue about what pluralism could yet mean as the religions become aware of the truly global context in which they now find themselves. |
