Document Details : Title: Statuses of Eastern Early Iron Age Nomads Author(s): DAVIS-KIMBALL, Jeannine Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 1 Issue: 2 Date: 2002 Pages: 332-356 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.1.2.3291993 Abstract : Excavations of Early Iron Age Sauromatian and Sarmatian burials in the southern Ural steppes revealed significant well-preserved artefacts, some of which represented statuses of individuals during their lifetimes. These artefacts, categorised by function and statuses, were assigned to each adult, according to the predominant artefacts in the burial. Three male and three female statuses were initially defined; further refinement of the methodology revealed two additional female statuses. Using this methodology, other distinctive burials of the same period in southern Siberia, southern Kazakhstan, and western China were reviewed, defining the statuses of the deceased. |
