Abstract :
Prior to the 1590s foundation of the Protestant Trinity College in Dublin and its Catholic continental rivals in Lisbon, Salamanca and Douai, Protestant and Catholic reformers competed for clerical recruits from the same traditional priestly families, with varying levels of success. The establishment of the colleges was fraught with difficulties but represented, nonetheless, a significant and irreversible step in the gradual professionalisation of Irish clerical education.
