Abstract :

Having recalled the relative character of the notion of attribution in the history of art, this article recalls that the figure of the author is itself dependant on one’s disciplinary view of artistic activity and is used to show the lot that the sociology of art has reserved for it by constituting itself as a materialist and determinist knowledge of the social world. The article then discusses on the level of values the responsibility and the role of discourse and the social representations of the artist before discussing the different figures of this modern and contemporary artist in the course of the historical process of emancipation from its former status as artisan, but also as a committed artist following variable paradigmatic models which are analysed and set out here in a heuristic way.
