Document Details : Title: Mary as Mediatrix Subtitle: André Scrima's Contribution to the Mariological Chapter of Lumen Gentium Author(s): COMAN, Viorel Journal: Journal of Eastern Christian Studies Volume: 73 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2021 Pages: 291-316 DOI: 10.2143/JECS.73.3.3290000 Abstract : This article explores the contribution of the Romanian Orthodox theologian André Scrima (1925-2000) to the Mariological section (chapter VIII) of Vatican II’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church. Based on archive research, this article takes a closer look at Scrima’s two main interventions in the final debates on the Marian chapter of Lumen Gentium: (i) his critical remarks at the meeting of the Secretariat for Christian Unity with the non-Catholic observers (22 September 1964); (ii) his 3-page text on Orthodox Mariology, which was sent to Mgr. Gérard Philips on October 4, 1964. In doing so, the main argument of the paper centers around the following claim: the decision of the conciliar fathers not to give the controversial term Mediatrix a prominent place in the document but to insert it among other Mariological titles within the broader context of intercession and liturgical piety is – to a great extent – the result of the important role played by André Scrima in the debates on LG VIII during the three months prior to the official promulgation of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church on November 21, 1964. |
