Abstract :
Hans Blumenberg’s oeuvre abounds with references to Sigmund Freud. Although Blumenberg became ever more suspicious of psychoanalysis toward the end of his life, his readings of Freud were also constitutive for his own thinking. What stands out in Blumenberg’s readings of Freud is the returning notion of the absolute. This article first explores Blumenberg’s concept of the absolutism of wishes, which he used as a synonym for Freud’s own concepts of the omnipotence of thought and absolute narcissism. Second, it turns to Blumenberg’s notion of absolute narcissism. Finally, it assesses his criticism of Freud’s entire intellectual project as an absolutism of truth.
