Abstract :
The present contribution aims to study the Syriac version of an edifying story belonging to the Byzantine hagiographical tradition. The Story of Peter the Tax-Collector, originally representing an episode of the Life of John the Merciful by Leontios of Neapolis, was widely transmitted in the Syriac collections as an independent text. The author of this article attempts to explain the textual relations between Leontios’ hagiography and the several recensions of this story in the Syriac tradition. Concurrently, such a study allows to answer to some unresolved questions concerning the Syriac reception of the Life of John the Merciful. After a detailed description of the Syriac witnesses, the author offers a reconstruction of the text’s history, helping the reader by providing a stemma codicum. The contribution ends by proposing the critical edition and the Italian translation of the Story of Peter the Tax-Collector.
