Abstract :

Transhumanism is the idea of an extension of the human body, psyche or intellect through the use of technological processes beyond the limitations constitutive of human nature. It follows that this is to be seen less against the background of concrete realisations (or the ability to be realised) than as an ideology or worldview that is reflected in the images of its visions. The (pop-)cultural roots of this stock of images will be explored first in this presentation. It becomes clear that they fall back on the classical topoi of science fiction but transforms them. Whereas in science fiction, as a rule, they have a paranetically critical ciphering function, they are now taken literally, but reduced paracletically-affirmatively. This is accompanied by a mythological charge: the topoi become images of hope that lend a postmodern garb to the human longing for the dissolution of boundaries. It becomes obvious how transcendental depths become recognizable behind the scientific-materialist gesture. Transhumanism basically proves to be an eschatological narrative readable in the form of a religion. This is another reason why transhumanist ideas are extraordinarily exciting from a didactic point of view. Thanks to their roots in fantasy (and the high degree of awareness of some concrete derivations), they are familiar to school pupils, at least from their media experience, and exert great fascination. This is justified and explained briefly by using concrete examples.
