Document Details : Title: Anthony Traill and the Holistic Approach to Kalahari Basin Sound Design Author(s): GÜLDEMANN, Tom , NAKAGAWA, Hirosi Journal: Africana Linguistica Volume: 24 Date: 2018 Pages: 45-73 DOI: 10.2143/AL.24.0.3285491 Abstract : Anthony Traill is widely known for having produced the first comprehensive phonetic and phonological analysis of the so-far most complex sound system in the Kalahari Basin and possibly among the world’s languages, viz. of the Taa language complex, specifically its East ǃXoon variety. In a number of articles he also laid the foundation for the phonological comparison of the diverse languages of this area. This fruitful combination of language-specific facts with cross-linguistic and universal patterns in particular characterizes his important contribution to African linguistics as well as to general phonetic-phonological theory. Since he achieved this groundwork, the knowledge on individual Kalahari Basin languages has grown tremendously. In this paper, we will explore several theoretical issues addressed for the first time by him and show how his academic oeuvre is still up-to-date in view of these modern data. Anthony Traill est largement connu pour avoir produit la première analyse phonétique et phonologique complète du système phonétique le plus complexe connu jusqu’à présent du bassin du Kalahari et peut-être du monde, à savoir celui du complexe linguistique taa, plus spécifiquement de sa variante ǃxoon orientale. Dans un certain nombre d’articles, il a également posé les fondements pour une comparaison phonologique de diverses langues de la région. Cette fructueuse combinaison de faits propres à une langue et de modèles interlinguistiques et universels constitue une contribution majeure à la linguistique africaine et à la théorie phonologique générale. Depuis qu’il a accompli ce travail de fond, la connaissance des langues individuelles du bassin du Kalahari s’est approfondie de façon saisissante. Dans cet article, nous explorerons plusieurs questions théoriques qu’il a été le premier à aborder, et nous montrerons comment cette oeuvre académique reste actuelle au vu de ces données modernes. |
