Abstract :
This paper examines the role of vase iconography through the history of classical studies. The aim is twofold: to begin with presenting a historiographical account of the main stages of scholarship development in the field of interpreting the scenes on ancient Greek vases. In the last section, I describe and propose a new direction for the field that is being formed up in the recent years, one allying iconography with field archaeological work and which goes beyond the art-historical, philological and anthropological approaches dominating the research in the past.
