Abstract :

This article investigates the original position of the crowds in Jesus’ ministry, through the perspective of Luke. The Lukan Jesus gives a puzzling priority to the crowds; they play some specific functions, including the listening of the Word of God, the accompanying of Jesus, the confession of faith and the demonstration of repentance. This will be shown through three stages: i) the priority given to the crowds by Jesus in the call of the first disciples, in Luke; ii) the face of the groups of people who listen to Jesus and interact with him, under the terms of crowds, multitude, or people; iii) the results of a complete analysis of all instances of ὄχλος in Lk, compared to those which are found or are missing in the other gospels.
