Abstract :
Responding from a Jewish perspective to Gavin D’Costa’s theology of Jews and Judaism as expressed in his book on Vatican II, I examine the implications of his rejection of some of the most important fruits of Catholic-Jewish dialogue in the past half-century. His theology leaves little space for the living Judaism of today and Jewish self-understanding, matters considered crucial in the Vatican’s implementation documents for Nostra Aetate 4. Consequently, he misunderstands the Jewish perception that all Christian mission, even if non-coercive, constitutes a grave existential threat. Finally, I address D’Costa’s reliance on the concept of ‘invincible ignorance’ and the unfortunate impact of employing technical terminology whose nuances one’s listeners will misunderstand. I suggest alternative framings of all these topics that would be more compatible with Jewish self-understanding.
