Abstract :
Contemporary theology of inter-religious dialogue is marked by a debate between pluralism and postliberal particularism. For the former, religious identity implies openness to religious otherness. Postliberal particularists, by contrast, draw attention to the value of identity. In the context of plurality, commitment and the particularity of the irreducible difference between religious languages are what matters. From this perspective, postliberal particularism claims that religions are untranslatable. This claim creates a barrier in the dialogue between religions. The discussion between pluralists and postliberals has now reached an impasse. In this article the author sets out to give this impasse a new turn. With this view in mind, she is inspired by Ricoeur’s latest publication On Translation (2006), which he dedicated to the enigma of linguistic diversity and the question of whether languages can be translated. Beyond the mesmerizing discussion on the theoretical possibility or impossibility of translation, Ricoeur states that the attitude appropriate to a translator is one of linguistic hospitality. He also suggests that this hospitality can serve as a model for inter-religious dialogue. However, he does not elaborate on this thought and challenges others to reflect on his suggestion. In this article, the author accepts this challenge, hoping Ricoeur’s idea will illuminate the current discussion between pluralists and postliberal particularists. Consistent with Ricoeur’s position, the author argues that religious languages can be translated and that inter-religious dialogue is possible, when built on an ethical posture of hermeneutical hospitality towards the religious other.
