Abstract :
This essay offers a sociological analysis of the problems the secular world has with religion’s visibility in the public domain. It does this via a theological reflection on the role of the body in secular public space, using the headscarf issue as a case in point. It shows how this reduces religion to superficiality while continuing to view it as a deeply rooted and dangerous manifestation. In this way, secularism operates as a kind of exorcism, a view that this essay throws open to discussion.
