Nederlanders hadden hem tijdens en na het concilie leren kennen als commentator van wat er in Rome gebeurde; de Nederlandse bisschoppen maakten graag gebruik van zijn diensten als zich problemen voordeden. Het ligt daarom voor de hand om hem een grote invloed op de na-conciliaire ontwikkelingen toe te dichten. De visie van Nederlandse katholieken op en de omgang met hun geloof en de veranderende plaats van de kerk in de samenleving hadden echter niet alleen, en waarschijnlijk niet in de eerste plaats, met de nieuwe conciliaire ideeën te maken. De jaren zestig waren in Nederland een periode van ingrijpende maatschappelijke en culturele verandering. Schillebeeckx’ optreden moet tegen de achtergrond daarvan worden gezien. Uiteindelijk probeerde Schillebeeckx onder de gegeven omstandigheden de dienst aan de kerk- en theologievernieuwing, waarvan hij de noodzaak tijdens het concilie verscherpt was gaan inzien, voort te zetten. De omstandigheden bleken echter minder gunstig te zijn dan hij voorzag. After the Second Vatican Council, Edward Schillebeeckx tried to play his part in the renewal of Church and theology, which as he had come to believe during the council, was needed. Conditions in the Netherlands turned out to be anything but favorable during the second half of the 1960s and the first half of the 1970s, however. Dutch catholics mainly hoped to use the space offered by the council to adapt the church to the changing circumstances. Even then, they considered Schillebeeckx to be a supporter, although in fact, he was actually more interested in a thorough theological contemplation of the contemporary situation as a basis for a renewed formation of the tasks of Church and theology. His proposal for such a contemplation was not adopted during the preparations for the Pastoral Council (1968-1970), at which representatives from the Dutch catholic community tried to formulate the consequences of the Second Vatican Council. Schillebeeckx wrote many articles on the changing relation between Church and world and towards to end of the 1960s started working on Jesus: An Experiment in Christology (1974). His theological answer to the council would in the end be a reconsideration of the confession to Jesus as Christ in the light of the contemporary situation. At the same time, however, Schillebeeckx would act as the episcopate’s troubleshooter after the council and try to explain the developments in the Netherlands to the authorities in Rome. In doing so, he devoted himself to the possibility of articulating a searching faith that aimed to find the faithful meaning of that day and age. |
