The main category for aiding this process is the category of human dignity, acceptable to the world's religions and the only theoretical foundation stated in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We can confirm this thought when comparing two main religious actors in the world scene; the Catholic Church and the Islamic tradition. On the one hand, the category of human dignity, fully embedded in the Catholic tradition, is a key concept in its understanding of human rights and helped in the process of its acceptance by the Catholic Church. On the other hand, although not so explicitly present in Islamic thought, the category of human dignity can be connected to the basis of Islamic tradition. The comparison of the acceptance of human dignity by the Catholic Church and the Islamic tradition gives us clues for thinking of the evolution of the religious approach to the human rights ethical paradigm. |
