Journal: Biblica Volume: 97 Issue: 4 Date: 2016 Pages: 492-502 DOI: 10.2143/BIB.97.4.3186052 Abstract : Biblical scholarship has largely read the rare ovine term טלא 'spotted lamb' (1 Sam 7,9; Is 40,11; 65,25) as another ovine designation of a 'young lamb', in spite of its direct linguistic correlation with the verbal root טלא 'to be spotted, multicolored'. In addition to its unique representation of a sheep according to physical appearance, this type of lamb’s lack of desirability in Genesis 30 (טלוא) and its strategic placement in both Isaiah 40 and 65 suggest that the טלא contributed to the view of the exilic and eschatological remnant in Isaiah 40-66. |
