Abstract :
The past five decades have witnessed the rediscovery of 'reception' as a lived ecclesiological reality, but the conversation has sometimes limped as a result of ambiguity, repetitiveness, and a lack of theological depth or precision. This study traces and then critiques those conversations, suggesting a better focal point, namely, the ecclesiological reception of Word and Eucharist. When one maintains the focus on those preeminent modes of ecclesiological reception, a consistent threefold dynamic occurs: our being taken up into the eschatological totus Christus, our actively striving to receive from his fullness, and our mutual acceptance of the fellow members of Christ. This Eucharistic ecclesiology of reception, in turn, sheds new light upon the debate over the ontological priority of the universal Church.
