Abstract :

In the face of the challenge of the refugee crisis, the European Union has discovered the limits of its political rhetoric. The frequent evocation of a community with shared values remains an empty promise so long as concrete measures continue to waver between solitary national initiatives and post-national ideals. In this situation it is time to put an end to mutual accusations and to define and justify common rules for Europe as a continent of immigration. Can ethics be of any help in this clarification process? Or will there simply be a continuation of conflicts of beliefs and values by other means? The underlying tension between idealism and reality has to be explored in a self-critical way.
