It suggests an ‘autographic’ approach to literature by adopting a methodology that was developed for what Nelson Goodman has dubbed ‘autographic art’: the examination of pentimenti. The article argues that genetic criticism studies a work’s ‘framing’ by discovering literary pentimenti as traces of adaptations in the writing process, by analysing the changed literary effects of these adaptations, and by figuring out how these effects are achieved. |
