According to the legend referred to here as the pig libel, Jews ask a Christian to sell them the heart of another Christian, plotting to use it with the sacramental host to exterminate the Christians by magic. The Christian cunningly changes the human heart for that of a pig. The pigs of the region die and the Jewish plot is discovered. The widespread nature of this legend, especially in Spain, raises the question as to the nature of the fear underlying this tale: that of blurring the frontier between people and animals, between good and bad magic, and between Christians and Jews. Parmi les accusations de crime rituel, il en est une, particulièrement populaire en Espagne, que nous proposons d’appeler la «calomnie du porc», qui n’a pas fait l’objet de travaux approfondis. Dans cette légende, des juifs demandent à un chrétien de leur vendre le cœur d’un des leurs, projetant de l’utiliser avec une hostie consacrée pour exterminer les chrétiens par magie. Le chrétien, usant de ruse, échange le cœur humain avec un cœur de cochon. Lorsque tous les cochons de la région meurent, la conspiration juive est démasquée. Nous nous intéresserons, dans cet article, à la nature de la peur qui sous-tend cette légende et qui relève de l’effacement des frontières entre l’homme et l’animal, entre la magie «blanche» ou positive et la magie «noire» ou négative et, finalement, entre les chrétiens et les juifs. |
