Abstract :
Despite the frequent attention given in Jonah studies to non-Israelites in general, scholars have not always noted the differences between the book’s presentations of the sailors and the Ninevites. This article explores the different responses of these two groups to the knowledge they gain concerning Jonah’s God within the context of the book’s theology, paying special attention to the tension between ethnic and religious identity. It also brings its conclusions into contact with research on the coherence of the Book of the Twelve and postcolonial approaches to biblical literature.
