Abstract :

Theology has become a marginalized discipline in the academy. Although it has the capacity to demonstrate its academic nature, there has been little recognition of that by other disciplines. Therefore, the article attempts to argue for theology’s legitimate place at the university in a threefold way and with a particular interest in how these arguments might be received by sociology (of religion): (1) the situation of religion in Europe has become ever more confusing. While secularization is going on, the theory that was employed to propel it loses ground. While the study of religions, sociology of religion and history of religion are important for understanding the phenomenon, theology is indispensable since it supplies religious citizens with a language that is both meaningful to them and more accessible to public scrutiny. (2) In 2010 the German Wissenschaftsrat has made recommendations for the continuous presence of theology at publicly funded universities. There obviously must be reasons compatible with public interests for the Wissenschaftsrat to come out in favour of theology. (3) Given the fact that religion has become an option (C. Taylor) that can be chosen or not, theology must propose reasons for taking such an option and why it is not irrational to do so. In this way theology gives proof of its academic nature while at the same time insisting on its peculiar form that results from theology’s subject matter, i.e., the believers’ relation to God.
