Abstract :

The long-run recurrence of the military escort — or comitatus — phenomena in Central Asia, both in the Iranian world and amidst the Turko-Mongolian nomads, has long been the focus of historians and the subject of numerous recent publications. New discoveries regarding the Sogdian institution of chākar, thereby questioning the historiographical model of the comitatus, give the opportunity to re-examine our data concerning the Chinggisid Mongolian military guards, and draw a finer distinction between nököd — the steppe comitatus par excellence — and keshigten, who have a lot to do with the chākar.
