While the Middle Ages spanned several centuries, the varied debates and beliefs surrounding the actual and symbolic nature of the body and blood of Christ throughout this time frame did not detract the laity from the act of communion, regardless of how negatively they were affected by the evolving theology surrounding it. This essay focuses on this relationship between theory and praxis, highlighting the influence that changes in thinking had on liturgical practice regarding a central tenet of the Catholic faith. L’évolution de la doctrine eucharistique de la transsubstantiation, menée jusqu’au Concile de Trente, fournit un exemple inestimable de la relation entre la pensée théologique et sa réception, et sa pratique par le clergé et le laïcat. Alors que le Moyen Âge s’étend sur plusieurs siècles, les débats et opinions variées autour de la nature actuelle et symbolique du corps et sang du Christ durant ce temps n’écartent pas le laïcat de l’acte de communion, insouciant de la négativité dont celui-ci était affecté par la théologie évolutive à son sujet. Cet essai se porte sur la relation entre théorie et pratique, mettant hautement en évidence l’influence que des changements en doctrine exercèrent quant à la pratique liturgique concernant une doctrine centrale de la foi catholique. |
