Abstract :

This paper examines the importance of providing theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches which best suit the complexity and the specificity of the field of counselling, psychotherapy and spirituality. First, using a case study, the paper illustrates the relevance of the contributions and limitations of two contemporary topics of research: the attachment theory applied to the relationship to the divine, and psychotherapeutic interventions based on mindfulness. Secondly, given their multidisciplinary nature, two theoretical approaches are proposed: the hermeneutics of Paul Ricœur, known for his intellectual rigor, and Gilbert Durand’s anthropological approach to the imagination, known for his innovative epistemology. In a third part, after comparing these two theoretical approaches which have a promising heuristic potential, the paper provides some arguments in favour of adopting an integrative perspective of research in counselling, psychotherapy and spirituality.
