The process of understanding occurs not only through the reading of texts but also through interpreting speech, images, sounds, symbols, etc. In the realm of spirituality, interpretation involves the creation of meaning by engaging in various religious practices that advance individuals on a path of spiritual development. This essay explores how the 12th century CE Korean Buddhist monk, Chinul, and the 4th century CE Christian monk and bishop, Gregory of Nyssa, both formulated a hermeneutical framework for progressing toward the ultimate spiritual goal. Similarities and differences between these important religious figures are highlighted for the purpose of gaining greater insight into the spirituality of hermeneutics and promoting interreligious appreciation. |
