We have graffiti with lists of expenses and prices, some of them even dealt out day by day. I suggest an interpretation which inserts these lists in the context of the rent management within the insulae. Moreover, I compare the lists of prices with the menu painted at the Thermae Maritimae of Herculaneum and with some Pompeii and Herculaneum piecework salaries, and try to draw conclusions about the standard of living and the economic expectations of the poor freemen. |
