Abstract :
The Second Vatican Council has been strongly influenced by the magnificent results of the renewal of the biblical, patristic and liturgical movements in the first half of the 20th Century. The Council also gave some guidelines for the renewal of theology within the Church. Our study deals with the question: what has happened to this inspiring theological dynamics, which was made possible at the Second Vatican Council? Has there been a positive reception of the theological openness of the Second Vatican Council fifty years on? Or, has it been forgotten, obscured or even made impossible by certain developments within and outside the Church? In order to answer that question, we first look at certain texts of the Council, where it reflects on the function and practice of theology. Secondly, we highlight the main points of the document Theology Today: Perspectives, Principles and Criteria, published by the International Theological Commission in 2012, and check whether it endorses and develops the insights of the Council. Thirdly, we formulate by way of conclusion some observations and suggestions concerning Catholic theological practice today.
