Abstract :
In the last decade, the 35th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, has carried out intensive programmes of archaeological exploration at many places on Kefalonia. New archaeological remains of all ancient periods have come to light. In the historical period, Kefalonia consisted of four different city-states (poleis): Krani, Sami, Pronnoi and Pali. The recent archaeological research provides insight in the layout of these urban centres and the activities of the inhabitants. Moreover, the archaeological results now enable the reconstruction of the poleis’ boundaries and infrastructure, providing important clues for Kefalonia’s topography in Classical, Hellenistic and Roman times.
