Abstract :
With the introduction of the English version of the third edition of the Roman Missal, some attention has returned to the fact that liturgical law instructs everyone to strike his or her breast at the triple admission of fault during the Confiteor. There is some confusion, however, about whether the breast is to be struck once, or three times. In an effort to better understand what the law requires, this paper examines the general history of the rubric. Several arguments are then presented, using the principle of CIC/83 canon 17 as a guide, all of which favor of the triple strike interpretation. In the end, a certain ambiguity remains: for without an explicit number being given in the rubric, or an authentic interpretation of the law, no interpretation can be considered perfectly definitive. But despite this ambiguity, the triple strike interpretation remains the most reasonable reading of the rubric, for it is the only interpretation that holds up to intense scrutiny. Ultimately, it is the only interpretation that satisfactorily harmonizes the prescribed words and gestures during the Confiteor's admission of fault.
