Document Details : Title: Snoeien in de wijngaard Subtitle: Het verhaal achter de Princelycke Lof-dichten (Brussel, 1660) Author(s): SLEIDERINK, Remco Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 55 Issue: 4 Date: 2013 Pages: 523-535 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.55.4.2999875 Abstract : In 1660 the Brussels printer Govaerdt Schoevaerdts issued Princelycke lof-dichten, a volume of poetry dedicated to Jan van Laer, chair of the Brussels literary society Den Wijngaerd (The Vineyard). A copy is extant in the Royal Library in The Hague (853 F 1), but up to now it has not been studied. When one juxtaposes it with the seventeenth-century index of Den Wijngaert’s membership and governance, it becomes clear that Van Laer was not recognized as chair by all the members. Apparently the literary society – to which also the well-known dramatist Claude de Grieck belonged – split up in 1660. With the volume Princelycke lof-dichten one of the two factions demonstrated its loyalty to Van Laer, claiming the name and heritage of Den Wijngaerd. It would seem that the conflict was based on diverging literary views, possibly a clash between Brussels’ internationally oriented dramatic literature and the less pretentious poetry of benign amateurs. |
