Abstract :
This article studies the textual, structural/narrative, and thematic parallels between Stephen’s prayer to Jesus in Acts 7,59-60 and the prayers to Jesus found in the five major Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles from the second and third centuries C.E. On the basis of these parallels and in comparison with prayers to Jesus found in (1) the rest of the New Testament, (2) the respective other four Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles, and (3) the Acts of the Christian Martyrs it is argued that Acts 7,59-60 is the most probable literary background of the prayers to Jesus in the Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles.
