Document Details : Title: The Gospel Manuscript of Kurashi Subtitle: A Preliminary Account Author(s): GIPPERT, Jost Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 126 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2013 Pages: 83-160 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.126.1.2983535 Abstract : The Gospel manuscript preserved in the mountain hamlet of Kurashi in Upper Svanetia is peculiar in many respects. It is cluttered with marginal and other notes, many of which seem to be mere writing exercises of a priest’s disciple but which also include a few sentences in Lower-Bal Svan, probably representing the oldest written monuments of this language. The Gospel text of the codex, allegedly of the 12th c., exhibits some peculiarities that contradict its being grouped together with most other minuscule manuscripts of the same age as pertaining to the ‘Vulgate’ recension of George the Athonite. One bifoliate of the codex is a palimpsest, with an underwriting in majuscules of ca. the 9th-10th cc.; the text, here restored for the first time, forms part of a lectionary of the ‘Jerusalem’ type, covering the period from the 9th to the 17th January, with several features that may be taken to be archaic. |
