Abstract :
After a historical introduction to the political situation in Indonesia since independence in 1945, recent developments in the Reformation Period, which started in 1998, are described. Because the Pancasila ideology from the Suharto period failed, several violent, interreligiously coloured conflicts broke out in Indonesia. There were also acts of terrorism. For some groups, a strong religious identity is seen as an alternative to Pancasila, with a growing intolerance between religions as a result. The radicalisation of religions was stimulated by transnational Islamic and Christian movements. The examples of the international terrorist Jema’ah Islamiy’ah organisation, linked to Al Qaida, the Indonesian political party PKS, linked to the Ikhwanul Muslimin in Egypt, and the international Hizbut Tahrir movement that wants to found the Khilafah Islamiyah are treated, The question is if the cultural and liberal Islam and the churches in Indonesia can counter radical religious movements within Islam and Christianity.
