Abstract :
In order to answer the question of the validity of resorting to the double meaning of the adverb ἄνωθεν to comment on Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus (John 3,1-21: to be born desuper, 'from above', or denuo, 'again'), this article analyses the meanings of the term in semitized Koine Greek (LXX, NT, Justin Martyr), takes a look at the instances of the Greek adverb in the Fourth Gospel, and concludes that desuper, 'from above', is the only one meaning consonant with John’s idiolect.
