Abstract :
In this article, I examine changes in the course of the Archaic period with respect to the depiction on Greek vases of what are often assumed to be ‘heroes’, i.e. (naked) male warriors. I devote special attention to the treatment of nudity and differences that appear with regard to armour and clothing following the inception of the red-figure style in Athens in the second half of the 6th century BC.
