Document Details : Title: The Positive of the Negative in Enuani Names Author(s): OKOH, Nkem Journal: Onoma Volume: 44 Date: 2009 Pages: 149-166 DOI: 10.2143/ONO.44.0.2143406 Abstract : While the premise is correct that anthroponyms are devised to differentiate one individual from others, the situation is far more complex. Enuani names can, of course, be classified by a variety of criteria, but for our purposes here, we have categorized the names into two – positive and negative names. The latter categorization proves that gloomy names, thought not to exist in Igboland, are actually found among the Enuani. The paper explores not only how names in our positive and negative categories are derived, but also the relationship between them. Not only is it argued that there is enormous interlocking here, the paper goes on to demonstrate that even the negative names serve an essentially positive purpose. More specifically, they are interpreted as a coping strategy, one which actually enables those who coin such names to better confront some troublesome situation in life. Pursuing the relationship between positive/negative names further, the paper posits a cycle of names, a configuration in which one name leads logically to another. The basic pattern here identified is that the latter name essentially represents a comment on some adversity, now successfully overcome, and thus celebrated or commemorated by the coining of another 'logical' name. Nicht nur wird angenommen, dass es hier zu einer enormen Verzahnung kommt; das Paper beweist, dass auch die negativen Bezeichnungen in Wirklichkeit einem positiven Zweck dienen. Genauer interpretiert das Paper sie als eine Strategie, die es denjenigen, die solche Namen prägen, ermöglicht, schwierige Situationen im Leben besser zu meistern. Der Beziehung zwischen positiven und negativen Namen weiter nachgehend, stellt das Paper eine Folge von Namen, eine Anordnung auf, in der ein Name in logischer Folge zu einem weiteren führt. Das grundlegende Merkmal, das hier herausgestellt wurde, ist, dass letzterer Name eine Anmerkung bezüglich einer Notsituation, die erfolgreich überwunden wurde, darstellt, und dass das durch die Prägung eines anderen, 'logischen' Namen gefeiert und erinnert wird. |
