Abstract :

It is generally assumed that Proto-Indo-European had a contrast between two genders, animate and neuter. Anatolian has confirmed this two-way distinction that could be arrived at through internal reconstruction. The other ancient Indo-European languages show a contrast between three genders. The masculine and feminine genders share the same inflection, which differs from the inflection of the neuter gender. The distinction between masculine and feminine is marked by the derivation, but the formal marks of the masculine and feminine are not distributed in a thoroughly consistent fashion. The two feminine suffixes are *-eh2- for the thematic nouns and *-ih2- for the athematic nouns. They have in common the morpheme *-h2- that looks like being present also in the formations of abstracts and collectives and in the endings of the neuter plural. Since the famous book by Johannes Schmidt (1889), who has equated the endings of the neuter plural with the stem finals of abstract/collective that had feminine gender and singular inflection, several scholars have tried to clarify the relationships between the different types of abstract/collective and the neuter plural. Despite the almost general consensus about the latter point, it has proved impossible until now to explain from this starting point the origin of the feminine in the non-Anatolian languages, whichever the genesis would be: 1) spread of the grammatical feminine from a noun that designated a being of female sex; 2) reinterpretation of the abstract/collective on the basis of the agreement with a noun that was already marked as feminine; 3) spread from the demonstrative pronouns, masc. *só, fem. *séh2; 4) individualizing transfer of the abstract/collective; 5) grammaticalization of nominal classes. From the typological point of view, the demonstrative pronouns play a major role in the evolution of gender systems. It is shown that the feminine gender started from the grammaticalization of a pronominal adverb with deictic value that referred to the earth, which was conceived by the speakers as feminine, by contrast with the sky, that was conceived as masculine. According to this scenario, the feminine in *-eh2- has been generalized in the demonstrative pronouns and in the thematic adjectives. A new explanation of the feminine of the devī-type is also proposed, starting from another feminine demonstrative pronoun that was built after the model of *séh2. In the post-Anatolian stage many nouns have been classified as belonging to the feminine gender according to semantic and formal criteria. This process has affected especially the abstracts in *-eh2-, and according to this model most other formations of abstract/collective have been transferred to the feminine gender.
